Our projects are designed to solve a problem in a community to help empower it out of poverty. Our goal is to provide long-term solutions without continuing any financial injections – our projects sustain and pay for their day-to-day running costs – and most importantly they help communities in need.

Project 2: Shallow well – Wakhungu Village

Assalamu Aleikum,

Alhamdulillah, all praise is to Allah (SWT) and may His peace and blessing be upon Muhammad (SAW). It gives us great pleasure to inform you that our second project will InshaAllah be a ‘Shallow Well’ in Wakhungu Village, Western Kenya.

In our lives today we have lots of conveniences and top of this list is clean running water in our homes. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that this is a gift from Allah (SWT). To many people around the world clean running water is not a normal day to day convenience.

Imagine if we had to fetch water each day for our daily use with no guarantee that we will find it. Imagine having to walk for kilometres in search for it and coming back home empty handed. No water for cooking, drinking or cleaning. This is what the people of Wakhungu Village go through.

Wakhungu is a small village located in western Kenya approximately 440 Km from Nairobi (Capital). It has approximately 240 people and majority of whom are small scale farmers. One Dollar project (ODP) working in collaboration with a local organisation have identified 6 other village in the locality facing similar challenges.

ODP aims to empower communities by developing self-sustaining projects which will benefit the whole community by addressing their immediate need and is expected to maintain itself without requiring further investment.

Simply, we aim to give a hand up, not a hand out.

A shallow well is a hand dug water well, 10 to 20 ft. deep and about 6 ft. diameter. It is lined with bricks and sealed with a concrete top slab. A hand powered pump is installed in the top slab which the people use to pump the water out.

The Wakhungu water project will cost approximately AU$ 2,500/- including 3 video recording of

  • before the project survey,
  • actual digging and
  • 6 months after the project feedback.
