LOCAL ORGANISATION MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN WESTERN KENYA
Founded in 2010 by a group of Perth professionals, One Dollar Project Inc. (ODP) is an organisation that focuses on empowering communities in developing countries, by creating self-sustaining projects.
Projects are designed to solve a local problem that will benefit the whole community and to provide long-term solutions without any dependence on financial injections.
Simply, ODP’s aim is to give a hand up, not a hand out.
ODP through its contacts in Kenya has identified 7 villages in Western Kenya which have no reliable water supply for cooking, drinking or cleaning. The residents of these villages walk for kilometers in search of water, often coming home empty handed.
These 7 villages are located approximately 440 kilometers from the capital Nairobi. Each village is home to approximately 240 people, the majority of whom are small-scale farmers.
Project 2 of ODP was to build a shallow well for the residents of Wakungu Village, one of the 7 villages identified, to provide this daily necessity. A shallow well is a hand dug water well, 3 to 6 meters deep and about 1.8 meters in diameter. It is lined with bricks and sealed with a concrete top slab. A hand powered pump is installed in the top slab.
Project 2 was initiated in April 2013 and completed in June 2013. For more details please visit https://www.onedollarproject.org.au/previous-projects
Each shallow well project is expected to cost approximately (AU)$2,500.
ODP is a licensed Australian charity; its distinction is in its low investment strategy. Members to commit to donating just one dollar per week and projects are designed to be self-sustaining.
